On November 17th, hundreds of people gathered on the island of Vinalhaven for a ribbon-cutting ceremocy for the Fox Island Wind Project, a community wind power project that will provide clean renewable power for the islands of Vinalhaven and North Haven. The three turbines have 4.5MW of wind power capacity, representing the largest coastal wind power project in New England. The huge gathering included school children, island residents, and scores of people who traveled to the island to see the turbines and attend the event, including: Governor John Baldacci, Representative Chellie Pingree, Maine Speaker of the House Hannah Pingree, Island Institute President Philip Conkling, Fox Islands Wind CEO George Baker, Cianbro CEO Peter Vigue, Diversified Communications CEO Horace ("Hoddy") Hildreth and many others who made this ground-breaking renewable energy collaboration possible.

Come be Bold in the Cold with NRCM as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary with a final event on December 31st at high noon -- a Polar Plunge in Portland. We'll gather at East End Beach to prove how brave we are, and how committed we are to the Natural Resources Council of Maine. NRCM started the year with a Polar Plunge, and raised more than $3,000 for NRCM's clean energy and climate work. We hope to beat that goal, and you can help -- by taking the plunge or contributing to your favorite polar bear. For more information, here's a link to our website, and also to a blog post about the plunge we did at the start of the year -- from an NRCM staffer who lived to tell the tale.

On October 16, 2009, staff from NRCM’s Clean Energy Project attended the grand opening celebration for the Kibby wind power project. Half of this 132 MW project became operational on the 16th, while construction on the remaining 22 turbines will continue into next spring. Once the entire project is operating, it will be the largest wind power project in New England, producing more than 357 million kilowatt hours of clean, renewable energy per year – enough to power the equivalent of about 50,000 Maine homes. Watch this short video for some shots of the operating turbines!

Each year, supporters of the Natural Resources Council of Maine nominate people in their community who are making a difference for Maine's environment. They then vote for the person they believe is most deserving. NRCM honors the winner at a special event. This year's winner was Evelyn Dunphy, "artistic ambassador" for Maine's environment. Congratulations, and thank you, Evelyn!

Congratulations, and thanks, to our winners!
